Q&A with Candice Low

1) Intro: Where are you from? Singapore

Where do you live now? Manhattan

Where is home? Not to be so cheesy and paraphrase Edward Sharpe, but it is with beloved friends and family. I also feel strangely at home in international airports.

Where do you feel most at home?  Any place that I live in long enough to know multiple shortcuts and invest in a bag of rice. Any apartment which I am so familiar with I can effortlessly navigate the kitchen--in this sense Providence (where Brown is) was where I felt very much at home. Any place where I can dress however I want (hah...).

2) What is the hardest thing (or one hard thing) about living in this city? Not being treated with respect by my lowlife slumlord/landlord! Constantly having to worry about making ends meet.

3) What does feminism look like to you? PJ Harvey + Lauryn Hill (circa 1998) + India Arie + Erykah Badu

4) How often do you feel vulnerable? Not that often--only when I don't know which direction I'm walking towards and/or when I'm wearing too few layers

5) Where do you go for stamina? Oranges give me stamina. But having to climb subway stairs all the time is also a source of building stamina!

6) Is there anything that you do to make yourself happy? Browse Asian grocery stores (I stand by my answer!!), bakeries or bookshops. Go for meandering walks. Dance, either in class at a studio, or in my living room when there's nobody home.

7) How do you make and keep friends? Through Iistening, laughing, imbibing wine and/or beer, sharing meals often

8) Do you feel powerful? Yes

9) How do you make home? Set up some speakers, season a wok, scavenge some furniture from the street (except the bed--that I purchase new), adjust the temperature accordingly, place a good book beside my bed.
